Get Volvo XC90 2003-2014 Engine Mount (Hydro) VLM-XC90LOW in Kenya

The engine mount is a crucial component in any vehicle, responsible for securing the engine while minimizing vibrations and absorbing shocks. Among various types of engine mounts, the hydraulic engine mount (hydro mount) is one of the most advanced, offering superior vibration damping and noise reduction compared to traditional rubber mounts.

Hydraulic engine mounts are commonly found in modern cars, luxury vehicles, and high-performance automobiles where Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) levels need to be minimized. Unlike standard rubber mounts, hydraulic mounts contain a fluid-filled chamber that enhances damping characteristics and improves overall driving comfort.

This detailed guide explores the functions, benefits, types, failure symptoms, maintenance, and replacement of hydraulic engine mounts.

2. Functions of a Hydraulic Engine Mount

The hydraulic engine mount serves several essential functions in a vehicle:

a) Engine Stability

• The mount secures the engine to the chassis, preventing excessive movement during acceleration, deceleration, and cornering.
• It helps maintain proper alignment between the engine and the drivetrain.

b) Vibration Damping

• The fluid-filled chamber inside the hydraulic mount absorbs and dissipates engine vibrations.
• This results in a smoother and quieter ride compared to solid rubber mounts.

c) Noise Reduction

• Hydraulic mounts significantly reduce engine noise by absorbing sound waves through the internal fluid.
• This enhances the comfort of the vehicles cabin, especially in luxury cars.

d) Shock Absorption

• The mount absorbs shocks from uneven roads, potholes, and sudden gear shifts.
• It prevents impact forces from being transferred to the engine, reducing wear and tear.

e) Load Distribution

• The hydraulic mount distributes engine weight evenly across the mounting points.
• This reduces stress on other components such as the transmission, subframe, and suspension.

3. Components of a Hydraulic Engine Mount

A hydraulic engine mount consists of several key components that allow it to function effectively:

a) Outer Housing

• Typically made of metal or high-strength polymer, the housing provides structural support.
• It encloses the internal components, protecting them from external damage.

b) Rubber Insulator

• A flexible rubber section connects the engine to the mount, allowing controlled movement.
• The rubber works in combination with the hydraulic fluid to absorb vibrations.

c) Hydraulic Chamber

• This chamber contains a specialized damping fluid that helps in vibration absorption.
• The movement of the fluid within the chamber absorbs and dissipates engine vibrations.

d) Fluid Channels and Valves

• These regulate the movement of hydraulic fluid within the mount.
• Some advanced mounts have electronically controlled valves to adjust damping based on engine load and road conditions.

4. Types of Hydraulic Engine Mounts

Hydraulic engine mounts come in different designs, each offering unique features:

a) Passive Hydraulic Mounts

• These mounts have a simple fluid-filled chamber without electronic control.
• They rely on the natural properties of hydraulic fluid for vibration damping.

b) Active Hydraulic Mounts

• These are electronically controlled mounts that adjust damping based on driving conditions.
• Sensors detect engine speed, load, and vibrations to optimize performance.

c) Vacuum-Controlled Hydraulic Mounts

• These mounts use vacuum pressure to control fluid movement and adjust damping.
• They are common in turbocharged and high-performance engines.

5. Symptoms of a Failing Hydraulic Engine Mount

Like all vehicle components, hydraulic engine mounts degrade over time. Common signs of failure include:

a) Excessive Vibrations

• When a hydro mount loses its fluid, it becomes less effective at damping vibrations.
• This results in a rougher, noisier ride, especially at idle.

b) Clunking or Banging Noises

• A failing mount allows excessive engine movement, leading to knocking or thumping sounds.
• These noises are noticeable when accelerating, braking, or shifting gears.

c) Engine Movement or Misalignment

• If the mount fails, the engine may tilt excessively or shift position.
• This can lead to misalignment of belts, pulleys, and drivetrain components.

d) Fluid Leaks

• Hydraulic mounts contain damping fluid, which can leak if the internal chamber is damaged.
• Signs of failure include oily residue near the mount.

e) Rough Gear Shifts

• A worn-out mount may cause harsh or jerky gear shifts, especially in automatic transmission vehicles.

f) Increased Cabin Noise

• A failing mount loses its sound-absorbing ability, making the vehicle interior louder.

6. Causes of Hydraulic Engine Mount Failure

Several factors contribute to the failure of hydraulic engine mounts:

a) Age and Wear

• Over time, the rubber deteriorates and the hydraulic fluid loses its damping properties.
• Most mounts last between 5 to 7 years, depending on driving conditions.

b) Heat and Oil Exposure

• Prolonged exposure to engine heat and oil leaks accelerates rubber degradation.
• Oil contamination can cause the rubber to soften and crack.

c) Rough Driving Conditions

• Frequent driving on bad roads, potholes, or rough terrain increases stress on the mount.
• Aggressive acceleration and hard braking also contribute to faster wear.

d) Engine Misfires or Imbalance

• If an engine has misfires or imbalanced components, it creates excess vibrations.
• This puts additional strain on the mount, causing premature failure.

7. Maintenance and Replacement of Hydraulic Engine Mounts

To maximize the lifespan of a hydraulic engine mount, regular maintenance is essential.

a) Regular Inspections

• Check for cracks, leaks, or excessive movement during routine servicing.
• Pay attention to vibrations and unusual noises.

b) Keep the Engine Bay Clean

• Prevent oil and coolant leaks from contaminating the mount.
• Clean the engine bay regularly to remove dirt and debris.

c) Avoid Aggressive Driving

• Avoid hard acceleration, sudden braking, and off-road driving.
• Smooth driving reduces stress on the mounts.

d) Timely Replacement

• If a mount shows signs of failure, replace it before it causes damage to other components.
• Use OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) or high-quality aftermarket mounts.

e) Professional Installation

• Proper alignment is crucial when replacing a hydraulic engine mount.
• A qualified mechanic should perform the replacement to ensure optimal fitment.

8. Cost of Replacing a Hydraulic Engine Mount

The cost of replacing a hydraulic engine mount depends on several factors:

a) Vehicle Make and Model

• Luxury and performance vehicles have more expensive mounts.
• Standard cars have affordable options.

b) OEM vs. Aftermarket Parts

• OEM mounts provide better durability but cost more.
• High-quality aftermarket mounts offer a cost-effective alternative.

c) Labor Costs

• Labor charges vary based on vehicle complexity and accessibility.
• Replacement costs range from $150 to $600, including labor.

9. Conclusion

The hydraulic engine mount (hydro mount) is a vital component that enhances vehicle stability, reduces vibrations, and improves ride comfort. Its fluid-filled design offers superior damping performance compared to traditional rubber mounts.

Regular inspection, maintenance, and timely replacement ensure the mount functions correctly and prevents damage to other vehicle components. If you notice increased vibrations, noise, or fluid leaks, its essential to check the engine mounts and replace them as needed.

Understanding the importance of a hydraulic engine mount allows car owners to appreciate its role in delivering a smooth, quiet, and reliable driving experience.
